Job Description
Optum is looking for a Senior Product Manager to take ownership of one of the healthcare industry's most widely relied-upon clinical decision-support platforms. InterQual is the evidence-based standard that health plans and hospital systems lean on for utilization management and medical necessity decisions, and this platform quietly sits behind more than 1,200 customer organizations and roughly 100 partner integrations. If you want product work with real, measurable weight — decisions here ripple into how care gets approved and delivered — this is that kind of role.
You'd be the single point of accountability for two connected pieces: the InterQual Medical Review Service user-facing application, and InterQual Connect, the platform underneath it that also powers InterQual Exchange, AutoReview, Customize, and Auth Accelerator. In practice, that means you're not just managing a backlog — you're the person who decides what gets built, in what order, and why, across a genuinely complex partner and platform ecosystem.
What you'd actually be doing
- Own the roadmap. Build and maintain a rolling 12–18 month roadmap for both the front-end application and the backend platform, working directly with engineering leadership on capacity and quarterly planning.
- Make the hard calls. Rank and prioritize across a wide portfolio of features, set the annual release calendar, triage production issues, and sign off on releases — including sensitive PHI-enabled releases where the right agreements are in place.
- Referee demand. Sit at the intersection of four partner product teams, plus Sales, customers, and internal service teams, and decide what platform work actually gets scheduled — and what doesn't, yet.
- Write the requirements that matter. Author clear, initiative-level PRDs and business cases, and help model the financial case for roadmap investments during capital planning cycles.
- Run the partner relationship. Own the technical relationship with major EHR and utilization-management platform vendors, including how API versions get deprecated and how partners migrate forward.
- Support the commercial side. Work with the Senior Director on positioning, packaging, and pricing input, and help Sales and Account Management actually launch what you ship — think enablement materials, field briefings, and RFP support.
- Stay close to the market. Run structured customer and partner listening so your roadmap reflects what's actually happening in utilization management and prior authorization today, not six quarters ago.
What you'll need to bring
- 7+ years of product management experience that spans both long-range roadmap ownership and the tactical, in-the-weeds delivery work
- Direct experience owning a technical integration surface that external partners or resellers actually build against — including how you handle versioning, deprecation, and migration
- A track record of producing multi-year roadmaps in a standard road-mapping tool and defending them across multiple stakeholder groups
- Comfort writing PRDs, Roadmap Initiatives (RMIs), or equivalent technical/business specs
- Experience building a release cadence and bottoms-up release plan for a multi-tenant SaaS or platform product
- Working knowledge of healthcare interoperability standards — HL7 FHIR is required; SMART on FHIR, C-CDA, and HL7 v2 are a plus
- Experience setting up intake and triage mechanisms for a high-demand platform or product
- The ability to prioritize credibly — and explain that prioritization convincingly — to executive, engineering, and commercial audiences all in the same week
Nice to have
- Background in payer utilization management, prior authorization, or claims systems
- Familiarity with SAFe or scaled PI planning, and tools like Aha! or Rally
- An understanding of how AI workflows are starting to show up in clinical and operational decision-making
- Working knowledge of HIPAA as it applies to data integration and PHI handling
