Automattic — the company behind WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Tumblr, and Beeper — is hiring a Senior Product Manager to take ownership of a core area within WooCommerce Payments, its payments product line and partner integrations. This is a hands-on, deeply executional role: you'll be the person writing and refining tickets, triaging incidents, shaping flows with designers, and driving decisions on a product that processes billions of dollars in payment volume every year.
You'll report into the Head of Product and work daily alongside engineering, design, support, and key payments partners including Stripe and PayPal. The quality of this product directly affects merchant revenue and shopper conversion at scale, which means this role sits at the intersection of reliability, trust, and execution — exactly where senior PM judgment matters most.
Key Responsibilities
- Own product direction and roadmap for a defined slice of the payments experience, with clear goals and measurable outcomes.
- Improve merchant and shopper flows across onboarding, checkout, refunds and disputes, payouts, and reporting.
- Reduce failure rates and friction points to lift merchant trust and cut support volume.
- Use support signals, data, and merchant feedback to prioritize the roadmap and make tradeoffs explicit.
- Manage and grow relationships with major payments partners, resolving integration issues and shipping joint improvements.
- Communicate clearly and asynchronously with cross-functional stakeholders on progress, risk, and decisions.
Requirements
- 7+ years in product management, including senior individual-contributor experience owning complex problem spaces.
- 4+ years in payments or fintech products, ideally at scale.
- Strong product judgment — comfortable making calls without perfect information.
- Experience working on high-trust, reliability-critical systems.
- Ability to work deeply with engineers on technical tradeoffs and constraints.
- Strong analytical habits: comfortable with metrics, dashboards, and instrumentation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication in a distributed, async-first environment.
Preferred
- Experience with large-scale or global product launches.
- Familiarity with WooCommerce, WordPress, or open-source ecosystems.
